If your practice serves traditional Medicare patients, then you’re participating in the Quality Payment Program (QPP), either on the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) track or in an alternative payment model (APM). Of the four categories of MIPS affecting reimbursement, cost is the least understood — and it may represent 30% of a practice’s future MIPS score. Administrators and clinicians need an understanding of total cost of care to build a strategy to actively manage healthcare costs. This session will define total cost of care, including total per-capita cost, Medicare spend per beneficiary and relevant episode-based measures. The speakers will provide examples of data sets, including instructions on how to access and/or request such data. They will provide examples of how practices can interpret and apply this data to managing costs reducing healthcare expenditures and using this information to inform key activities, including mergers and acquisitions/strategic partnerships, payer contracting, network alignment, physician compensation methodology.
